Sub-projects in Chabalisa

In autumn 2018, during our first official club trip, we built a large rainwater cistern that holds over 40,000 liters of water. In addition, we have installed a treatment plant that cleans this water. This means that clean water can be provided for the children and religious in the area all year round.

The water supply

With the help of the rainwater treatment system, the rainwater from a part of the roof area of the house is first collected in a 40,000 liter tank made of reinforced concrete before it then goes through several treatment steps. The tank volume selected is matched to the roof area used and the amount of precipitation. In addition to two sediment and particulate filters, a UV disinfection lamp is used for the treatment, which ensures that pathogenic microorganisms are killed. The cleaned water is then pumped into a 1,000 liter plastic tank using a solar pump, from which clean water can be drawn permanently. In addition, a water pipe leads from this tank directly to the house and supplies it with running water.

An overflow leads the water not removed from the plastic tank back into the reinforced concrete tank, which creates a constant circulation, which also counteracts the nucleation in the reinforced concrete tank. The water volume in the plastic tank is thus exchanged more than ten times a day and goes through the cleaning stages each time before it gets back into the fresh water tank.

The system is easy to use and requires little maintenance. For such maintenance work, we carried out training courses with the nuns, in which we tried, for example, changing the filter cartridges every six months.

We brought water quality tests from Germany to check the water quality. Due to the heavy rainfall during the rainy season, a rainwater treatment plant is a useful and important component of the center's fresh water supply.
